What is Aqeeqah العقيقة ?
Aqeeqah is an Islamic ritual performed by Muslims
to show their gratitude to Allah for their new born.
It is an emphasised Sunnah (Sunnah Mu’akkadah).
Typically, two goats are offered for a
male child and one goat for a female child.
Evidence of Aqeeqah العقيقة
Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
“Every child is in pledge for his ‘Aqeeqah, which should
be sacrificed on his behalf on the seventh day, and his head
should be shaved and he should be given his name.”
– (Abu Dawood)
It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her)
that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
ordered us to slaughter a sheep for a newborn girl,
and two sheep for a boy.
– (At-Tirmidhi)
